How To Put On The Perfect Party

FORGET PARTYING LIKE IT’S 1999! IT’S 2019, TIME TO PARTY LIKE A PRINCE!

The Admirable Crichton are party specialists who have laid on events for the world’s elite – from the Royal Family to Prime Ministers and Olympians. Managing Director Ruth Lawton-Owen lets us in on the secrets to putting on a five-star show…

What’s the most important thing to think about when you’re hosting a party?
The biggest pitfall is lack of communication. The hosts need to be clear about what they want and the planner needs to keep things realistic. Whether it’s a corporate event, a birthday or wedding, we need to know the client’s aims. One client wanted a wedding in a wood, but levelling the land would have cost thousands. Did they want it that much?

Is it difficult to keep people within budget?
There’s no reason to overspend. People can get carried away, but you can have a unique and memorable day – with lots of little wow factor touches – without being extravagant. A good planner will give advice and keep you on track.

What about planning something at home?
Have an icebreaker for when guests arrive – a ‘Guess Who’ gallery of pictures or a retro soundtrack, something silly gets guests talking, especially if they don’t know each other. Try to include lots of unique touches because it’s the personal things that people remember. These needn’t be expensive; handmade chocolates or cookies as guests leave. We always try to surprise clients with some extra little things that are in keeping with the theme of the party.

MAKE THE NEIGHBOURS ENVIOUS WITH RUTH’S TOP PARTY TIPS

HAVE SOMETHING INTERACTIVE

“Last summer, we had a lot of gin bars: people chose their gin, their tonic, and their garnish – they got involved. Craft whisky is becoming popular. Anything that gets guests talking is good.”

HIRE SOME HELP

“Even if it’s just one person, it’s so much easier for a host if you’ve got a waiter on hand. Otherwise, you can find yourself taking guests’ coats, getting drinks, trying to chat... it can really put the pressure on.”

SERVE UP A UNIQUE TIPPLE

“Create bespoke cocktails to put a personal stamp on your party. We make our own syrups – it’s easy to do, it’s different and fun, and it can help give your party a theme.”

KEEP IT SIMPLE

“Sometimes people put on too much – a huge choice of drinks, lots of activities... People will say; ‘Did you try this?’ and others will feel like they’ve missed out. A choice of two activities or drinks is often better than four.”
