IONIQ is more iconic than ever

Cars20 February 2020

IONIQ has been breaking records and setting world-firsts ever since its launch in 2016. Then, it was the first car in the world to offer three electrified powertrains – Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and full Electric - in one body shape.

That, together with the revolutionary hydrogen-powered NEXO and the Kona Electric, means Hyundai offers the widest range of electrified powertrains of any car brand. And whilst other manufacturers are still planning or just launching their first eco-mobility vehicles, Hyundai is leading the way once again with comprehensive upgrades to IONIQ.

The new IONIQ Electric’s battery has been upgraded by more than 10 kWh, for example, so it can drive even further between charges, while its energy storage capacity has been improved by 36% to give a range of 193 miles. On top of that, the new Eco+ driving mode reduces the car’s energy consumption to extend the range further. Moreover, thanks to the paddle shifters by the steering wheel, the level of regenerative braking can be changed depending on the route and journey, allowing for braking – even to a standstill – without using the brake pedal. This allows kinetic energy to be harvested, further optimising the efficiency of IONIQ.

But that’s just for starters…

Design upgrades
A new distinctive pattern on the closed grille and updated front and rear bumpers give IONIQ Electric a more dynamic look, while redesigned LED headlights, taillights and daytime running lights give design standout as well as an additional level of safety.

IONIQ is now available in seven colours including the new Fluidic Metal and Electric Shadow, but the upgrades haven’t been kept to the car’s exterior. The high-resolution 7-inch LCD console display has been redesigned. There are intuitive touch-type controls for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning, while blue ambient lighting across the centre console and glovebox give the car a futuristic feel.

Safer than ever
IONIQ looks smarter than ever, is more environmentally friendly than ever and, thanks to the Hyundai SmartSense technology package, is safer than ever before. The car is packed with technology that constantly monitors its environment to protect it from potential hazards. The list of standard safety features is long: there’s Front Collision Warning and Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, and new Cyclist Detection Ability and Driver Attention Warning, as well as Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist. Meanwhile, Lane Follow Assist keeps the car within the lane to add greater peace of mind on those busy long journeys.

Then there’s Smart Cruise Control with Stop&Go which allows you to stay within the speed restrictions and ensures you always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, Blind Spot Detection System, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Alert, and Leading Vehicle Departure Alert which notifies the driver when the vehicle in front has driven away from a stop. The list goes on…

Connected like never before

Safety has also been carefully considered when it comes to IONIQ’s enhanced connectivity features. eCall automatically dials a call centre which can contact the relevant emergency service if the airbags are deployed or the call button above the rear-view mirror is pressed. Relevant information such as the time of accident, driving direction, airbag and impact sensor information is sent to the relevant service for a quick response.

The 10.25-inch interactive display provides a state-of-the-art screen for navigation and infotainment. Split-screen functionality means the desired information, widgets and menus can be customised and edited.

Hyundai Bluelink® is a connected vehicle system that uses an embedded sim card to gives drivers of IONIQ Electric remote access to charging status. It also gives owners of all models instant access to Live Services such as car park and petrol station locations and prices, live traffic and weather information, precise information on journey times and reliable ETAs. Bluetooth even allows two phones to be connected simultaneously so you can listen to your playlist and take calls from your work phone, for example.

All these life-enhancing, easy-to-use technologies mean that, when it comes to eco-mobility, IONIQ continues to lead the way.
